The primary reason comes down to weight distribution. In the 90 we are always going to be short on space which means that something needs to go on the roof. Tents, bedding and so on tend to be light but very bulky. Putting those items on the roof frees up valuable space inside the vehicle without putting too much weight on the roof. Weight that high up is never a good idea in any vehicle, never mind one that is likely to be used off road.
As a bonus we get a sheltered sleeping area with a full size double bed and a comfortable mattress. The tent we’ve chosen is the Howling Moon Star Gazer, so called because the fly sheet can be removed and there are mesh/fly screen covered windows in the roof allowing us to lay in bed and admire the stars that you only get to see in remote areas of the southern hemisphere… I’m sure we’ll do that at least once 🙂
